Indoor Gardening – Growing Your Own Herbs
Indoor gardening is no more difficult than gardening in your own backyard (or front yard, depending on where your garden is). It is also the perfect solution for urban dwellers, especially those living in apartments or condominiums that offer no space for an actual garden. It has also been proven that urban dwellers, the kind of people that are most vulnerable against all kinds of stress, are much more at ease and experience less stress related illnesses when they have a garden. However due to a few limitations (one can obviously not grow a full-fledged tree inside their apartment), there are only a few kinds of plants that are suitable for indoor gardening.
Indoor Gardening – The How To’s
If you live somewhere in the northern hemisphere, then your plants and herbs are in serious danger during winter. If you live in enclosed spaces like apartments, there’s just simply no place to raise a garden. But all that can be solved simply by indoor gardening.
For indoor gardening, herbs are best since they are normally short and do not need too much light and maintenance. Common household herbs like rosemary, thyme, sage, mint, parsley and chives are perfect for this kind of indoor gardening. Needless to say, you must also have containers that are preferably 6-12 inches deep. You can plant several different herbs in one long container, or maybe have a 6” pot for individual planting. Make sure you do not put too much water on your container as herbs have a tendency to dislike wet soil. Water them sparingly.
Indoor Gardening – The Importance of Grow Lights
Also, make sure that you position your plants somewhere in the southern or western part of your house, or wherever there is ample sunlight, at least 5 hours of sunlight. If this isn’t possible, then grow lights are what you need. There are several different kinds of grow lights and each kind caters to the individual needs of your little greenies. Some plants need maximum sunlight while other plants need as little sunlight as possible. Herbs need maximum sunlight, at least 5-10 hours a day so a fluorescent grow light is perfect for it. Also, make sure that you time your grow lights to turn on and off to allow the normal light and dark cycles that plants have to go through.
