How to Landscape a Garden – Tips for Beginners

The term landscape can be quite imposing. It could easily discourage anyone from trying it out. But the reality is, landscaping is basically just shaping your piece of land to however you want it to be. It’s just a matter of clearing out the rocks and the stones and grass and weed, and then making sure it’s clean and ready for you to shape it and design it.

How to Landscape a Garden – Planning

There are many ways on how to build a garden. Many internet sites and books offer you many ways, some more complicated, some too technical, and some seemingly easy. It’s just a matter of finding out which one works best for you. But the first step you have to take on how to make a garden is the planning phase. Have a mental picture of how you want your garden to look like. Look up several different pictures of gardens, or look at your neighbor’s gardens. Find inspiration everywhere you can when you want to learn how to landscape a garden. Also consider the plants that you want to have in your garden. If you have flowering plants, make sure that at least 50 percent have the same flowering time. This will benefit you in the long run. Consider the height of the plants that you want and make sure they all work together to make your garden beautiful. Use a garden hose, spray paint or flour to show the areas where you want your plants to grow. These will serve as markers or guides for you.

How to Landscape a Garden – The Plants and Flowers

Once you are done with the planning and the cleaning, you can ask your neighbors or friends if they can give you transplants. This way, you would not have to spend too much on seeds or seedlings. Also if you are a beginner gardener and you want plants with shapes, there are several different kinds of plants that form shapes on their own. This will make your gardening easier. For beginners, you might want to get plants that have low maintenance first, and work with it until you are comfortable with it. Then you can start growing more complicated plants as time passes. Also, ask professionals about tips on how to landscape a garden with different kinds of plants and flowers.

How to Landscape a Garden – Accents

Also consider if you want pathways or walkways or other garden accents. Again as with the plants and the flowers, make sure these garden accents blend well with your plan. Build fences or yards if you want one, just as long as it does not hinder your plants growth. As much as possible, use garden art (like status and fountains) sparingly. Garden arts are used only as mere accents, to enhance the beauty of your garden plants. Never let them overwhelm your plants, making it look more like a statue museum than a garden. Let nature take the center stage.

And as with most things, work on your garden slowly and steadily. Gardening, more than a hobby, is a lifestyle. Remember well that you are only borrowing nature’s beauty to enhance your surroundings. Therefore maintain it well.
