We have all heard of the saying “building something from the ground up.” This applies from buildings to governments, and even to gardening. The quality of the soil you use for your garden can give you the world’s most beautiful garden, or a pile of dead seeds and seedlings. The garden soil is where your plants will get their food and nutrients. It is also where they will anchor themselves. The garden soil will be your plants’ best friend and source of life-giving nourishments. Once you get your garden soil up to par, your garden’s health is almost a sure thing.

Garden Soil – The Ingredients in Feeding Your Plants

The great thing about gardening is that all aspects of it can be likened to different happenings in our everyday, normal lives. And preparing the soil for your garden can be like cooking a dish whose tastes should vary depending on who is eating it. Some people like their food sweet, salty, spicy, or in my case, extra spicy. Some like their food warm. The ingredients are pretty much the same. What we need to know is the varying amounts of each ingredient, and how much we should put of each ingredient in garden soils for specific types of plants.

Garden soil and garden potting soil is generally mixed with compost, manure, peat moss, and mineral dust. These are mixed in with the top soil. The ration of the amount of ingredients that you should mix with the garden soil will vary depending on the plant. Understanding the subtle science of garden soil composition is very important especially if you have a variety of plants that you want to grow. Some plants will need less water and more sand. Some will need more water.

Garden soil composition can be improved by adding more compost and manure. There are a lot of ways on how to create compost, like which things should be added into your compost heap. You can check with your local gardening shop to find out what works with your plants. Manure, on the other hand, is a natural source of Nitrogen and a variety of other nutrients that are excellent for your plants. Compost and manure also encourage beneficial organisms to cultivate within the soil as well as discourages harmful bacteria and organisms.

Garden Soil – The Key to Keeping your Plants Happy

Soil is sometimes considered a living organism as it contains a myriad of living organisms that are either beneficial or harmful to your plant. However, no matter how well you have prepared your garden soil, no matter how many times you’ve made sure that dug and mulched and cleared grass and weed and added special ingredients to your soil, the soil will still need maintenance from time to time. It will still need your care.

Maintaining your soil ensures long and healthy lives for your precious plants, making you the envy of your friends, neighbors, even family. Check with local or online resources for more information on how to maintain a good garden soil.

You know tons of stuff about gardening and you know you can write but you’re afraid that you will only be wasting your time and effort for something that not a lot of people will and can appreciate. Or maybe you’re a beginner gardener, but you know you can write and you want to share everything that you’ve learned. Think gardening is just one more hobby for old, secluded people?

Think again.

Gardening Books – Writing for Beginners

Gardens, especially do-it-yourself gardening, are starting to gain popularity once again. More and more people are enjoying the benefits of gardening today. Hence, gardening books for beginners are starting to become abundant and is also becoming very profitable.

If you think you don’t have too much experience to become a reliable source for beginners like yourself, think again. Being a beginner means that you know what other beginners know. You have the same apprehensions, the same mind sets and the same questions. You are in the perfect position to write gardening books for them, even a gardening e-book! You can list down what you have done, all the mistakes you made and how you corrected them. The honesty and the human factor you introduce in your writing will make your readers appreciate you even more.

Or if you don’t consider yourself a beginner anymore, then that means you have so much more to offer to your readers. Years of experience have taught you what is best to do. All you need to do is to remember who you were when you first started gardening. It is best to write as someone your target audience can relate to. Remember all the questions you had. Remember all your uncertainties and how you overcame all your difficulties.

Gardening Books – E-Books

Gardening e-books are also very profitable today as people find the internet a much more convenient way of gathering knowledge and know-how. Also, e-books do not take up space in storage, does not need to be physically delivered and does not need tons of paper. It is a far cheaper way of publishing your knowledge to the information hungry online community. E-book authors normally earn up to 90% of the price for every copy sold. This is so much more than what traditional gardening books authors make.

Gardening Books – Keeping Up to Date

Never forget to stock up on knowledge as well. There are a lot of gardening books out there that offer different techniques and knowledge about gardening and all aspects of gardening, from soil to fruits. Reading a lot of different books can give you an idea, perhaps a perspective authors have missed. Or maybe a topic no one has bothered writing about but you know people need to know. Also, technologies on gardening are rapidly developing, so you must be sure to keep yourself up to date.

Not a lot of people are gifted to incorporate two of the things they love doing the most. And this could be your opportunity to belong to these rare species of people. So stop hesitating and start writing!

The term landscape can be quite imposing. It could easily discourage anyone from trying it out. But the reality is, landscaping is basically just shaping your piece of land to however you want it to be. It’s just a matter of clearing out the rocks and the stones and grass and weed, and then making sure it’s clean and ready for you to shape it and design it.

How to Landscape a Garden – Planning

There are many ways on how to build a garden. Many internet sites and books offer you many ways, some more complicated, some too technical, and some seemingly easy. It’s just a matter of finding out which one works best for you. But the first step you have to take on how to make a garden is the planning phase. Have a mental picture of how you want your garden to look like. Look up several different pictures of gardens, or look at your neighbor’s gardens. Find inspiration everywhere you can when you want to learn how to landscape a garden. Also consider the plants that you want to have in your garden. If you have flowering plants, make sure that at least 50 percent have the same flowering time. This will benefit you in the long run. Consider the height of the plants that you want and make sure they all work together to make your garden beautiful. Use a garden hose, spray paint or flour to show the areas where you want your plants to grow. These will serve as markers or guides for you.

How to Landscape a Garden – The Plants and Flowers

Once you are done with the planning and the cleaning, you can ask your neighbors or friends if they can give you transplants. This way, you would not have to spend too much on seeds or seedlings. Also if you are a beginner gardener and you want plants with shapes, there are several different kinds of plants that form shapes on their own. This will make your gardening easier. For beginners, you might want to get plants that have low maintenance first, and work with it until you are comfortable with it. Then you can start growing more complicated plants as time passes. Also, ask professionals about tips on how to landscape a garden with different kinds of plants and flowers.

How to Landscape a Garden – Accents

Also consider if you want pathways or walkways or other garden accents. Again as with the plants and the flowers, make sure these garden accents blend well with your plan. Build fences or yards if you want one, just as long as it does not hinder your plants growth. As much as possible, use garden art (like status and fountains) sparingly. Garden arts are used only as mere accents, to enhance the beauty of your garden plants. Never let them overwhelm your plants, making it look more like a statue museum than a garden. Let nature take the center stage.

And as with most things, work on your garden slowly and steadily. Gardening, more than a hobby, is a lifestyle. Remember well that you are only borrowing nature’s beauty to enhance your surroundings. Therefore maintain it well.

The quintessential gardener has different kinds of garden tools each used for very specific purposes. Over the years he has collected a fairly large amount of tools which he knows by heart how to use and maintain. These tools were also designed by fellow gardeners who have discovered ways and means on how to make gardening easier. And then they were refined and refined until it came down to us. We, the present gardeners, amateurs or professionals, beginners and old-timers, now have at our disposal hundreds of tools which we can use to enhance, maintain, and/or expand our gardens.

In this article, we will talk about the most common of garden tools.

Garden Tools – A Long History

The earliest tools came from agricultural paraphernalia used by man. Because agriculture expanded and gardens remained small, the present gardening tools are just refined agricultural tools from our ancient past. They were refined in such a ways that they were made stronger, or more useful for specific types of gardening plants, but not necessarily altered. The earliest gardening tools, (which were also farming tools), were made from sticks, stones and bones.

Garden Tools – Weeders and Landscapers

The most common tools, and the easiest ones to find at retail, hardware, or even flea markets, are weeding tools. Weeding tools are pretty common because no garden is ever safe from weeds. Yes, weeds are the hardest thing to get rid of because they are relentless. They always find a way back into our precious gardens. The most common kind of weeding tool is the hoe. And even the hoe has several different kinds, like the warren, the draw, the Japanese, or the scuffle. There is no best kind of hoe so you might want to try out a few for different kinds of jobs. Then there’s the trowel, different kinds of knife, and other sorts of weeders. As we have mentioned, they have similar purposes but each is specialized for a very specific kind of job.

Then there are your landscape tools. These are basically in charge of clearing out lands for starting gardeners, or maintaining gardens for those who already have their own gardens. The common kinds of landscape tools are your chippers, shears, chainsaws (for those with trees in their gardens), rakes, spades, shovels, and so many more. All these things are used to make sure that your garden is clean and well-maintained. They also help shape your garden.

Garden Tools – Maintenance

But all good things must come to pass. It is only a matter of how long these things will stay good. So keep your garden tools well maintained. Make sure that you remove all the soil from your garden tools. After washing them, make sure you remove all traces of water as this will allow your tools to rust. If you have used your tools with chemicals like fertilizers or pesticides and the likes, make sure they are cleaned thoroughly and then dried thoroughly as well. Also make sure that your tools are regularly sharpened and well-oiled. Oh and don’t forget to take extra care of the most important garden tool you will ever have…your hands.

Indoor gardening is no more difficult than gardening in your own backyard (or front yard, depending on where your garden is). It is also the perfect solution for urban dwellers, especially those living in apartments or condominiums that offer no space for an actual garden. It has also been proven that urban dwellers, the kind of people that are most vulnerable against all kinds of stress, are much more at ease and experience less stress related illnesses when they have a garden. However due to a few limitations (one can obviously not grow a full-fledged tree inside their apartment), there are only a few kinds of plants that are suitable for indoor gardening.

Indoor Gardening – The How To’s

If you live somewhere in the northern hemisphere, then your plants and herbs are in serious danger during winter. If you live in enclosed spaces like apartments, there’s just simply no place to raise a garden. But all that can be solved simply by indoor gardening.

For indoor gardening, herbs are best since they are normally short and do not need too much light and maintenance. Common household herbs like rosemary, thyme, sage, mint, parsley and chives are perfect for this kind of indoor gardening. Needless to say, you must also have containers that are preferably 6-12 inches deep. You can plant several different herbs in one long container, or maybe have a 6” pot for individual planting. Make sure you do not put too much water on your container as herbs have a tendency to dislike wet soil. Water them sparingly.

Indoor Gardening – The Importance of Grow Lights

Also, make sure that you position your plants somewhere in the southern or western part of your house, or wherever there is ample sunlight, at least 5 hours of sunlight. If this isn’t possible, then grow lights are what you need. There are several different kinds of grow lights and each kind caters to the individual needs of your little greenies. Some plants need maximum sunlight while other plants need as little sunlight as possible. Herbs need maximum sunlight, at least 5-10 hours a day so a fluorescent grow light is perfect for it. Also, make sure that you time your grow lights to turn on and off to allow the normal light and dark cycles that plants have to go through.

You enter this serene place where the plants seem to be in random places, and yet at the same time, they look as if they were placed there on purpose. Unlike most gardens you see, this garden has plants that are cut cleanly, solid shapes forming out of clumps of leaves so that from a distance, you’d think the clump of leaves was actually one solid object. The garden in front of you actually looks like a portrait: The plants, rocks, water, even the lantern help shape a picture of, perhaps, the mountains, the heavens, even another garden. From a distance, you would think you’re looking at a miniature forest, complete with rivers, lakes, stone formations, and the greenery. And then, something else fascinates you. Typical gardens are placed at backyards or inside greenhouses. But this garden has the house as its center piece! Right there, in the middle of the serene garden, is the gardener’s house.

No doubt you are in a typical, classical, Japanese garden.

Japanese Gardens – An Ancient Tradition of Perfection

Japanese gardens were first designed under the influence of the Scholar’s Garden, more commonly known as the Chinese Classical Garden or simply the Chinese Garden. The first gardens were made for religious purposes. It then evolved as a place for ceremonies, contemplation, and amusement. Several other factors, such as the arrival of Zen teachings and the fact that the shoguns simply enjoyed gardening, allowed gardening techniques to flourish and develop until it came to a point where it became closely related to the arts of calligraphy and ink painting. In fact, it became so aesthetically important that the tradition of making Japanese gardens should only be passed down from master (or sensei) to apprentice.

Japanese gardens are always aesthetically pleasing. It always evokes a sense of tranquility and peace. It is believed that only an artist with a soul at peace, in complete balance, can create a great garden. The tradition of making a garden is steeped in so much history and tradition. It’s not just a work of art. Most of the time, it is almost like a religious experience.

Miniature Paradise

True to its loyalty to nature, Japanese garden plants are mostly green, with just a few exceptions offering subtle tones and changes in climate. Flowering shrubs and trees are used but in limited number only, and mostly just for emphasis purposes. Stones are used for pathways and bridges. Since Japanese gardens are mostly loosely based on natural landscapes like mountains, the stones also act like mountains, or clumps of mountains. The water source is made so that it looks like its naturally part of the environment. This is why traditional Japanese gardens do not have fountains. Water sources are also designed irregularly, so as to look more natural. The main point of making Japanese gardens is that they should always look like a miniature world. This is why the Japanese garden plants have bonsais.

The Japanese have perfected the art of capturing the tranquility and beauty of nature in miniature.

During the ancient times, flower gardens were non-existent. Flowers were often thought about as weeds, useless and a waste of space. As time passed, some farmers decided to spare a few species of flowers as they were aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. This caused an artificial selection process, leaving only the flowers that humans thought were pretty. Because of advances in agricultural technology, we made them even prettier. Today, there are thousands of flower gardens, specifically designed to show off the beauty of flowers.

Planning your Flower Gardens for Beauty

Some people think that gardening is just a matter of plopping down plants, planting them wherever they may fit. But to make a real, functional garden, a little planning goes a long way, especially when you want a flower garden.

Take a little walk around your neighborhood and see which colors would fit in, or stand out, in your community. Also, consider the space where you want your flower garden to be. Do you want it in front? In your backyard? Or do you want your flower garden to run around your house? Think about the kind of landscaping you want. There are a variety of sources where you can find different kinds of landscaping, especially for flower beds. Considering that you already want a flower bed, then you must also have the flowers that you want in mind. Make sure that these flowers would work properly with the landscape design you want. Think of other things that you want to place in your flower garden, like accents and accessories. If you want to make flower beds (you probably will want one), then mark out the area of your flower bed with a spray hose, or flour. Some may even use spray paint. If you want raised flower beds, then you must determine the materials you will use for edging. Check with online sources or literary resources for different ways to start your flower garden. It may sound different, but it is basically almost like starting a regular garden.

A Joy Forever

That may be true, but we have to remember that flower gardens, like any living thing, need constant maintenance. There are several ways to protect your garden against weeds, but it is still important to visually inspect your garden regularly for any stray weeds or stranglers that will cause considerable damage to your beautiful flower garden. Also, think about the flowers that you have in your flower gardens. Each individual type of flower has unique needs that should be met.

No matter what kind of flower you want and what kind of flower you plant, it is best to make sure that, above all else, you are happy with your flower garden. If you prefer your flower gardens to be manicured to perfection, not a blade out of place, that’s fine. Or if you want your flowers to grow in magnificent disarray, then that’s no problem as long as you’re happy with it (as long as it doesn’t violate any laws).

Gardening, in the simplest of terms, is the practice, or to some extent, the art of growing plants. It has a very ancient history, reaching as far back as the prehistoric times. This came to being as the ancient people, our ancestors, needed to grow herbs and vegetables for food and medicinal purposes. Our ancestors also thought that the gods liked gardens. This is because gardens often give people a sense peace and relaxation. Thousands of years of relying on the greeneries that grow around us for food and shelter has instilled in us some sort of dependence on our green friends. Gardening can be found everywhere in the world in various styles and designs. And with the advancement in science, gardens can now also be found in conditions previously thought to be impossible for plats to grow in.

Gardening – A Source of Joy

There are hundreds upon hundreds of hobbies out there. But no hobby offers as much pleasure as gardening does to the well-being of a person. The joy of gardening is being enjoyed by millions and millions of people in all continents. What was once a source of living for our prehistoric ancestors, which became the marker for a person’s social status, is now being enjoyed as a soul-cleansing, stress-relieving hobby by people in all walks of life. It is simple, instinctive, and ultimately very gratifying.

Gardening has been known to improve a person’s mood. Since ancient times, people convene and hold parties on gardens because of its serenity and the peace it gives to people. The act of gardening itself, though it may seem tiring, has been known to reduce stress and give the gardener a peaceful feeling. Some psychologists even recommend gardening for their troubled patients. And time and time again, they have seen constant improvements as the days pass by. Wouldn’t you want to experience the joy of gardening for yourself?

Gardening – Slow and Steady

In today’s culture, where everyone seems to be in a hurry, starting a garden is the least of people’s priorities, especially in urban communities. Plants do not grow overnight which is not ideal for people who are obsessed with instant gratification. But this is the exact reason why experts agree that starting a garden can do wonders to people. It is the antithesis of the culture today. It allows a person to slowdown and see a perspective Nature has always seen, and has worked for it: The Slow and Steady Perspective. Now is the perfect time to start with this hobby. You don’t need acres of land. You can have a garden inside your own apartment. And the tools are cheap and easily available at your local hardware. And information about starting a garden is abundant in bookstore, even free on the internet. It is time to add patch of green in your life hectic life, and maybe a few more colors along the way. Go back to your ancient roots and let nature work its wonder in you as you work with nature too.
